The FTC says just stating that a link is sponsored isn’t enough, and publishers should use a short phrase that clearly says they’re being paid when a link is clicked. Having disclosures is important, the Princeton paper notes, because posts with affiliate links usually get more engagement from users. This means they’re more likely to be picked up by algorithms and shown to users through search or in their feeds. The paper states:
When promoting your affiliate program, make sure you’re including information that potential promoters want to know. Generally, the most influential parts of your program are the product/service relevancy, affiliate program reputation , and affiliate network or tracking platform. Make sure you include that information when you promote your program.
Regardless of the content you choose to pin or your motivations, successful pinners adhere to Pinterest CEO Ben Silberman’s guiding principle: make (and keep) the site “beautiful”. Simply put, the best pinners find the best of the web, regardless of subject matter, and there are some simple tactics from a presentation standpoint that you can use to help improve the performance of your pins.
My audience is entrepreneurs, people who own their own business and want to use video to better market that business. It would make ZERO sense for me to randomly speak about a kitchen organizer and link an affiliate link to that on my channel – but – it would make #allthesense for me to include a small testimonial for a new app I’m loving for business and include an affiliate link.
After successfully launching their Australian affiliate program with Rakuten Marketing, Cotton ON utilized their affiliate program as a key channel for their strategy to expand to new international markets. Through the Cotton ON Australia program, publisher partnerships in the key markets of Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore are accessed, with a bespoke US affiliate program being managed by local US account managers.
How will you track and assess your activities? I use Google Analytics to monitor traffic from Facebook to my site. It gives me an understanding of how I’m doing and enables me to compare my Facebook traffic to other sources like Twitter, YouTube, organic search, and email marketing. Facebook provides social media analytics/insights to page and group owners. Also, there are many third-party Facebook marketing tools.
22. Run sidebar ads targeting fans of the actual brand. Sidebar ads aren’t all that useful for conversions since a lot of people ignore them or have them blocked, but the exception is when you know those people are already fans of the product specifically. This works best with brands that only produce one thing, or if you’re targeting fans of pages that are fan pages for the specific product rather than the brand as a whole.
As a last option you can choose to promote your page, utilizing Facebook’s internal advertising system to get it out there. If you have the funds to do so, this is definitely something to look into. Don’t feel any rush however, as you can opt into this at any time, not just in the initial set up phase. For the purposes of this walk-through I won’t do this yet, although there is a section about Facebook Ads a little later in the lesson.
Hi Ally, You don’t need anything like Leadpages or autoresponders to use affiliate links on Pinterest. All you need are to be a part of some affiliate programs and a Pinterest account as I mentioned above! I pay for neither Leadpages nor an autoresponder, I’m not sure why they would be necessary for affiliate marketing? Maybe I have misunderstood. Gemma
By creating a favorite things page, you can direct interested parties from all of your social platforms to this page when they ask about anything you love or use. AND you can include that link in your YouTube description knowing that it can continually be updated and improved so present and future viewers of your videos will be able to see the updated version at all times.
I can very well understand how it must be with you 🙂 It’s been that way for me over the years, but this time I’m already home and not having the pressure of getting too many things done in one year-end vacation here. Feels much relaxed, and unlike otherwise I’m able to keep my blog alive over the holidays too. It’s a different feeling altogether for me this time.
It used to be that you’d scan the Yellow Pages and look for a fellow handyman to swing by and fix your gutters or leak. With the Thumbtack app you can enter in the type of project you need someone to work on, whether that’s a Wedding DJ or a Handyman, Thumbtack has the most extensive database of available workers on your project willing to bid on it.
11. Fairness to “Closers”: When educating affiliates about the types of links to use, Amazon.com encourages them to use “Add-to-Cart” buttons and the reason is more than compelling: once the item is placed in the card the affiliate can then “receive credit for the purchase as long as the customer places their order within 90 days” (as opposed to their standard 24-hour affiliate cookie life).
Hi Tasha and Abby, very intersting post . Tasha, I’ve noticed that you’re using Amazon links too. Doesn’t Amazon only allow affiliate links on your own website? No social networks, no emails, no ebooks, no nothing else… I’m not a native English speaker, so maybe I misunderstood the terms (they are complicated as hell for me). But good to know that with a less strict company it’s possible to use affiliate links on Pinterest too. Thank you for the info!
15. Find other affiliate marketers in related niches and reach out for a partnership. I see this most often with food-based bloggers who use affiliate marketing and promote each other’s content. This is great for them because there’s an infinite variety of recipes and personal stories to go along with them. The more personalized and varied your niche, the better off you’ll be.
I did change some things on my ads: banner, text and audience and got 23 likes with 550 views which is quite good for me. The strange thing is I had CPM method and decided to create new campaing with CPC payment method and now I have 0 likes in 580 views.. Do you maybe know why? Do you recommend more CPC or CPM in regards to getting likes on fanpages?
If you would like to provide your affiliates with a Shopify coupon code that they can give out to people instead of giving them their affiliate link, this feature is what you would use. When this feature is implemented, if a customers uses an affiliates promo code, they will get a discount for their purchase and the affiliate will get credited their commission for referring the sale.

Promote your blog content that includes affiliate links on your Facebook business page and profile. But, don’t just share the link. Instead, make it meaningful so that you gain a higher post reach. In your Facebook content, explain what your new blog post is about, how it can help your audience, and some of the helpful products that you’ll talk about in your article. Link to a couple of them within your Facebook content, too.
I would almost always rather send traffic to a reputable mid-sized merchant than a big-box merchant like Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy or others. The commissions are usually better, the customer service is usually better, and the cookie duration is almost always better. When Walmart told me that blogs weren’t allowed in their program, I was at first surprised and a little offended, but I quickly shrugged it off. Joining Walmart’s program hadn’t even crossed my mind until they approached me at Affiliate Summit and asked what I did.
If you have a second car lying around, there’s a way to turn that into a money-making opportunity. Turo acts as a car marketplace where fellow neighbors and visitors can rent your car much like you’d do if you went to a car rental service like Hertz. Instead of renting a lot through Hertz though, you’ll have a massive selection of cars near and far.
Marques Brownlee, who is mentioned in this post and featured in our Top Tech Reviewers, is a fantastic example of how to include affiliate links on your YouTube videos that actually provide viewers with even greater value. With such high quality, professional tech review videos, it’s easy to see why he has a YouTube following of nearly 3.5 million people, and receives well over a million views on many of his videos.
I am trying to find a way to generate income from our 1.2mm facebook page. We are an animal welfare organization and we would be willing to advertise products, videos, etc., that relate to animals. How do we make that happen? All the affiliate programs I see are website based (ours in being revamped) but our biggest asset is our FB page. Can you point me in the right direction.
No matter where you’re at with your business - whether you're a newbie or seasoned expert - it’s always beneficial to drive more traffic to your store. More traffic means more leads, more leads usually mean more conversions, and more conversions means more sales. The bottom line? Affiliate marketing done right can dramatically increase your sales and revenue.
Time really is money at Amazon. If the user decides not to make a purchase within 24 hours of clicking your trackable link, you get nothing because the cookie code has already expired. On big ticket items like TV’s and refrigerators, this is very common. Additionally, if they don’t trust your site, they may simply exit the browsing session and go to Amazon directly, which also means you miss out.
